About the Lexile Text Analyzer

The Lexile Text Analyzer® is designed to evaluate the reading demand or complexity of a text. This process is referred to as measuring, and the result is a text measure that represents the difficulty of analyzed text. The Lexile Text Analyzer measures text by evaluating the entire piece and its characteristics, such as sentence length and word frequency, which represent the syntactic and semantic challenges that a text presents to a reader. The outcome is the reading difficulty, expressed as a Lexile measure, along with the Word Count, Mean Sentence Length, Mean Log Frequency, and Early Reading Indicators for texts 650L and below.

For more information about the Lexile Framework and Lexile measures see Lexile Framework for Reading.

Users can access the Lexile Text Analyzer source code via four product offerings:
  • Lexile Text Analyzer Professional produces a Lexile measure for internal development purposes without word limit restrictions.
  • Lexile Text Analyzer Editor Assistant includes a document management system, editing history, search capabilities and is ideal for content developers or companies trying to produce content at specific reading levels.
  • El Sistema Lexile para Leer evaluates the reading demands of articles, passages and other Spanish texts not already available in the database.
  • Lexile Text Analyzer API lets you send text via an XML-RPC API and receive a measurement in return.

Each product reports the same metrics but differs in how they are offered (web tool or API) and features (ex: searchable history). The process for preparing text for analysis is the same no matter which product you use.
