Successful measurement will result in the following metrics.

Early Reading texts

Measure Description
Lexile Measure The quantitative complexity of the measured text reported numerically followed by an ‘L’ for Lexile. Measures below 0L will be preceded by a ‘BR’ for ‘Beginning Reading’.
Word Count The total number of words measured in the text.
Mean Sentence Length The average sentence length in the measured text.
Mean Log Word Frequency The logarithm of the number of times a word appears in each 5 million words of the Lexile Corpus of 1.5 billion words. Word frequency is not the number of times a word appears in a specific passage, but the frequency of the word in the Lexile Corpus.
Structure Indicator A descriptor that reveals the text’s position as compared to Early Reading texts. Easier texts have more repeated words and phrases. Harder texts have fewer repeating words and phrases. Also represented visually through the purple meter bars.
Semantic Indicator A descriptor that reveals the text’s position as compared to Early Reading texts. Easier texts have more common, familiar, and concrete words. Harder texts have more rare, unfamiliar, and abstract words. Also represented visually through the light blue meter bars.
Decoding Indicator A descriptor that reveals the text’s position as compared to Early Reading texts. Easier texts have words with fewer syllables and simpler sounds (e.g., “net” and “shop”). Harder texts have words with more syllables and more complex sounds (e.g., “balloon” and “ceremony”). Also represented visually through the green meter bars.
Syntactic Indicator A descriptor that reveals the text’s position as compared to Early Reading texts. Easier texts have shorter sentences and more words that overlap between sentences. Harder texts have longer sentences and fewer words that overlap between sentences. Also represented visually through the dark blue meter bars.
