Collaboration with Partners

What are the ways that a partner can work with MM on oral reading?

MetaMetrics’ oral reading partnerships vary depending on the type of oral reading assessments the partner currently has in place and/or wants to develop.
  1. The partner has a teacher-administered oral reading assessment. MetaMetrics reviews and validates the partner’s manual scoring protocols to ensure alignment with the assessment approach taken by Metametrics in the development phase (e.g., calculating accuracy from words attempted). MetaMetrics then integrates the Lexile oral reading API with the teacher-administered assessment. Partners send test passages, WCPM, and accuracy scores, and the API returns student Lexile oral reading measure(s). The oral readability measures of the submitted passages are also returned.
  2. The partner has their own automatic speech recognition (ASR) or has an ASR provider that scores student oral reading performances and is one of the partner ASR providers that MetaMetrics has validated for use with the Lexile Framework for Oral Reading. MetaMetrics integrates the Lexile oral reading API with the partner to accept the accuracy and WCPM scores provided to the partner from their ASR provider. These scores, along with the test passages sent by the partner, are used to calculate and return student Lexile oral reading measure(s). The oral readability measures of the submitted passages are also returned.
  3. The partner needs a full end-to-end solution. The partner is developing a fully automated oral reading fluency solution and elects to have student audio analyzed through MM and our ASR provider (currently Carnegie Speech). MetaMetrics integrates the Lexile oral reading API with the partner to accept student audio files provided by the partner and the test passages ready by the students. MM sends the audio files to Carnegie Speech, which returns student WCPM and accuracy scores. These scores, along with the test passage measures, are used to calculate and return student Lexile oral reading measure(s) and qualitative feedback in the form of glow and grow statements. The oral readability measures of the submitted passages are also returned.

Can students get a Lexile oral reading measure without a separate linking study?

In most cases, a linking study is not needed to provide a Lexile oral reading measure for students. Partners who are interested in providing a Lexile oral reading measure can work with MetaMetrics to develop an end-to-end solution or integrate their current oral reading assessment system with the Lexile oral reading API. If a partner calculates the WCPM and accuracy scores for students, MetaMetrics can use these scores (once validated to ensure alignment with MetaMetrics’ scoring metrics) provided by the partner along with the Lexile oral readability of the passages to produce a Lexile oral reading measure for a student.
